Joining a student org is the best way to get involved in college. If you don’t know what a student org is, it’s basically a group of students recognized by the university. Each one has an interesting purpose that motivates the students to join. Some of the best times I had in college were in these orgs. So here are 5 reasons why you should join a student org!
1. Learn new skills
Want to learn how to build rockets? Well then, the Society of Aeronautics and Rocketry at USF (SOAR) will teach you to do just that! How about learning how to build the next big app? Then check out the Software Engineering Club at UF! Orgs are a fun way to introduce yourself to new skills, which you can then brag about on your resume.
Many orgs often connect with employers who are looking to recruit students. This is great if you’re looking for an internship or an entry-level job. The Society of Women Engineers has an annual conference where students are hired by top companies such as Google and SpaceX! Also, the friends you make from these orgs will be in big places, so it’s nice to have a connection if needed.
3. Get Involved
Student orgs are the best way to get involved in college. In my last year at college, I joined the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). I made so many friends, got invited to parties (pre-covid of course), helped set up an outdoor career fair, and volunteered with local K-12 students interested in STEM. I wish I joined sooner!
4. They’re free!
Best of all, student orgs are free to join! The university funds these orgs so that all students can join. Nothing beats free.
Thank you for reading all the way through. My co founders and I all met through student orgs and Zublease wouldn’t exist if I never joined. We hope you’ll consider joining one!
