The Most Powerful Self-Improvement Tool. The Planner.

Call it what you want. Planner, todo list, schedule. They all essentially accomplish the same thing. The planner helps you organize your objectives and forces you to maximize your productivity levels. Remember what you are working towards and your work should reflect that. Avoid overhead such as frequently checking your emails at all costs. Time is precious so I put together this guide to help you accomplish more.

First things first

Write down your goals for the day in the planner. You can do this the night before or morning of. I personally prefer the night before that way I can start the morning with focused work. Spending time deciding what to do takes energy so keep that in mind. There are planner apps like Todoist. I like to use something physical and have it on my desk. I tend to forget about the apps on my phone.

Avoid multitasking

Schedule a block of time to focus on your hardest tasks. Doing this will allow you to enter into a flow state and work at your highest level. Put your phone out of reach and avoid checking your emails or doing anything besides your task. This is important as deviating away from your work will cause distraction and reduce your productivity. It’s okay to take breaks but be intentional with it.

When you’re done with a task, cross it off!

This feels super good. At the end of the day, I like to look back at all of my accomplishments. If I find I’m just completing meaningless tasks, then I make a conscious effort to only write down actions that I find important. I don’t consider checking/answering emails, doing administrative work, or attending meetings to be meaningful tasks and I try to minimize those as much as possible.

At the end of the day…

This is totally optional but I like to write down my biggest win. I also write down what I’m thankful for, no matter how small or silly it may seem. For example, the other day this random stranger started a conversation with me. We ended up talking for about half an hour about life and then exchanged numbers. I was thankful I made a friend that day. It’s proven that gratitude is a great way to improve your happiness. Sometimes we get so busy and forget all the wonderful things that happen to us such as a friend calling us to say hi or your significant other cooking you a delicious meal. Remember to smell the roses!
